The Raider wrestling team turned in one of its best days ever at last Saturday’s Marshfield Sectional, getting four individuals through to the state tournament, putting seven wrestlers on the awards podium, and scoring the second most sectional points in team history.

“We had a great day,” head coach Chris Hansen said. “Ninety-five-and-a-half team points are the second most we have ever had, and we have had some great teams.”

Seniors Dima Hawksford, Derek Schindler, and Austin Koski, and junior Eliot Motu all qualified for this weekend’s WIAA State Tournament in Madison while freshmen Sawyer Massie and Matt Koski, and senior Nick Nelson joined them as sectional place winners.

“The sectional has four top 10 ranked teams, including No. 1 and No. 3,” Hansen noted. “It is difficult to get anything accomplished in that environment, so to have four state qualifiers and seven sectional place-winners is very impressive.”

The four state qualifiers are the most the Raiders have had since they sent five wrestlers to state in 2009.

Hawksford, Schindler, Motu and Austin Koski will hit the mat for preliminary rounds at the WIAA State Tournament Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Kohl Center in Madison.
