A stand-up comedy class will be offered by Scott Novotny on six Mondays, March 4 through April 8, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., culminating in a special showcase on Thursday, April 11 at The Phipps Center for the Arts.
Novotny comments, “Ever been told you’re funny, and you should try to do a stand-up comedy act? But how do you do it? This class teaches you how to build a stand-up comedy routine using your own material in a fun-filled environment.” A step-by-step approach will enable participants to develop a three to seven-minute routine that will be performed in the Black Box Theater at the end of the class on a special showcase night. “Whether you’re young or old, it’s never too late or early to start making people laugh. It’s a wonderful gift to share. Also, comedians who are already working and want a place to create some brand new material for their show are welcome, too,” the instructor adds. The class is limited to 12 students.
A professional comedian for over 30 years, Novotny brings his vast array of talents to this class. Besides numerous national television appearances, Novotny is also a former company member at Dudley Rigg’s Brave New Workshop, appeared at the Minnesota State Fair and The Corn Palace, is an award-winning writer, and was the founder and artistic director of The Comedy Cabaret, the first comedy club in Minnesota. He has also taught improvisation and stand-up comedy classes for over 30 years as well. Graduating from Gustavus Adolphus College, Novotny majored in theater/speech and English, and has directed and acted in numerous theatrical and film productions.
