Jenna Evenson, HHS Class of 2002, center, has been named Somerset High School Teacher of the Year for 2012-13 and has been nominated for the Kohl Teacher Fellowship.
Evenson has been a counselor at the school since 2008. She holds a Master’s of Science in education from UW-River Falls and a bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology from Winona State University.
In addition to her duties as counselor, Evenson serves as advisor to the junior class and National Honor Society.
The award recognizes several initiatives by Evenson, both in school and in the community. She was instrumental in starting “Friends Helping Friends,” a student group that pairs regular education students with students with special needs for field trips and school activities.
She has also implemented two counseling groups. Transition Groups are led by middle and high school counselors and are for students who are in need of help making the transition from middle to high school.
She also started art therapy and emotional control groups that work with students who need additional support with their emotional needs. The group focuses on resiliency skills that will help the students navigate high school. She also team teaches with the school’s health instructor to educate students about depression and suicide.
Evenson’s community involvement began when she was a student in Hudson. She was the 2000 Pepper Fest queen and has remained involved in Pepper Fest organization. She was also an Americorps staff member with Youth Action Hudson (formerly Community Action), working with Hudson students on a number of leadership and service projects in Hudson, the Twin Cities, Chicago, Mississippi and Michigan. She remains active in YAH as an adult volunteer, sitting on the programming committee.
In the announcement of her award, the Somerset District said, “Evenson has shown her dedication in going above and beyond for students, staff and the community during her time at Somerset High School, and she truly cares about what is best for our students. She is an exemplary educator and continues to encourage students to excel in both the academic and community arenas. We are fortunate to have such a professional as part of the Somerset team.”
She is the daughter of Richard and Barbara Evenson and the granddaughter of Roger and Patty Evenson, and Marcy Rose. She is engaged to be married to John Oman, who also worked at YAH as an Americorps member.
