He was born on Oct. 29, 1947, to Ralph R. and Minnie A. (Avery) Akenson in Rice Lake, Wis. David graduated from Barron High School in 1965. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in geography from UWRF in 1969, where he was also a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. He married Gail E. Johnson on May 31, 1969. From 1969 to 1971, he honorably served our country in the Army. After the service, he worked with his father at Amery Motors until 1979. He was a Lutheran Brotherhood agent from 1979 to 1994. Most recently, he worked at Mills Fleet Farm.
David was a secretary and past master of the River Falls Masonic Lodge #109 and Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Zor Shrine Club. He was an active member at Ezekiel Lutheran Church, serving as an usher and on the church council and other committees. He was involved with the Amery Jaycees and was a Boy Scout leader.
David had the most beautiful garden in River Falls. No weed was safe. He loved giving away the produce he grew in his garden to his neighbors and friends. He also enjoyed playing 500 with his friends. He loved the Lord, his family, and his friends unconditionally. Dave was a pillar in both his family and community. He was the one who kept the conversation lively and the jokes rolling. He was a gentle giant, wise, friendly, and entertaining and he will be missed, missed, so missed.
He is survived by his children, Andrew D. Akenson and Rebecca J. (Michael) DeRuyter; grandchildren, Elsa E. Akenson, Emma P. Akenson, Martin A. Akenson, and Willard M. DeRuyter; brothers Gregory L. (JoAnn) and Bruce; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie Avery Akenson, and father, Ralph R. Akenson.
A funeral service for David will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church in River Falls. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the Cashman-Hill Funeral Home in River Falls, and for 1 hour prior to the service on Saturday. There will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Nora Cemetery in Rice Lake.
