Milwaukee Bucks forward Yi Jianlian carried the Olympic torch Sunday on the South Chinese island of Hainan.

After a controversial tour overseas, some Chinese said they were relieved the flame was safely home.

Yi was among the first of 208 people carrying the torch along palm-tree-lined roads in the sea-side resort of Sanya.

Actor Jackie Chan was the day’s final bearer and he hoped it would spread a message of peace to the world.

The Western leg of the torch tour was marked by protests over China’s policies, and its treatment of Tibet.

Some of the torch-bearers criticized the Western media’s reporting of the incidents saying they don’t understand China at all.

Organizers in Sanya promised a trouble-free tour that will wind through every Chinese province before the torch gets to Beijing for the start of the Games on Aug. 8.
