Authorities say a man near Wausau was out of jail on work release when he shot a woman he was ordered to stay away from.

Gary Weisenberger, 54, of Schofield wounded his 45-year-old ex-girlfriend and then shot himself to death.

It happened Monday at a home in Rothschild.

The woman was shot in the leg and the back of the head. She was in good condition at last word at a Marshfield hospital.

Weisenberger was arrested in April for taking $1,000 from the woman’s Social Security and disability checks.

Prosecutors said he oversaw her finances.

The arrest sent Weisenberger back to jail for violating a previous probation.

The charges said he asked the woman in a letter to tell police the theft allegations were a mistake.

He said he was depressed enough and could not handle any more time behind bars.

eisenberger had spent two years in prison for causing injury by drunken driving, and was freed in 2004.

It was his fifth OWI conviction.
