Superior police arrested two Minnesota men after standoff on Ogden Avenue early this morning.
At about 12:15 a.m. this morning an officer from the Superior Police Department was flagged down by a female in the 1800 Block of Ogden Ave. The female reported to the officer that a man at her apartment, 1809 1/2 Ogden Ave., had been severely beaten by another male in the apartment. As the officer approached the residence he encountered a male armed with an ax. He quickly retreated into the apartment.
Additional officers responded to the scene and secured the residence, and attempted to initiate contact with the two males in the apartment. Communication between the two males inside the apartment and officers occurred, with the two males refusing to exit the apartment.
One of the males, believed to have been the original “victim” as described by the female, claimed to not have injuries. During this time the two males were also overheard discussing the potential use of firearms.
The area around the residence was blocked off and the Department's Emergency Response Team was called in. Around 1 a.m., the males inside the apartment ceased communicating with officers, but could still be heard moving around inside the residence and talking.
Once the Emergency Response Team arrived additional neighboring residences were cleared and/or secured. Attempts at re-establishing communications with the subjects were initiated again both via telephone and a public address system.
Gaining no compliance from the subjects chemical munitions were deployed into the residence at about 3:35 a.m. At approximately 3:41 a.m., officers from the Emergency Response Team were able to take both subjects into custody.
A 29-year-old Duluth man was arrested on initial charges of disorderly conduct, resisting or obstructing an officer, both misdemeanors, and failure to comply with officer's attempt to take person into custody, a felony. The suspect also had a number of outstanding arrest warrants.
A 27-year-old Lutsen man was also arrested initial charges of disorderly conduct, and resisting/obstructing an officer.
