An Eau Claire man is scheduled to be sentenced March 9, after being found guilty of killing a man in a car next to him at a traffic light.

A jury deliberated six hours yesterday before convicting Yeng Moua, 26, of first-degree intentional homicide.

Moua faces a mandatory life prison term, but the judge can set a date when he would be eligible for extended supervision.

According to prosecutors, Moua was stopped at an intersection last July when an argument began with people in the adjacent car.

He got out and stabbed Joseph Weisenbeck, 29, of Menomonie to death

Eau Claire County District Attorney Rich White said there have been very few cases in his 18 years as a prosecutor where somebody lashed out with this type of violence.

He called it an unprovoked attack and Moua should be in prison the rest of his life for it.

But public defender Jessie Weber told the jury that Moua was reckless but he didn’t plan to kill Weisenbeck. Weber said both men were drunk and she portrayed it as “more like a bar fight.”

The jury rejected an option to convict Moua on a lesser charge of reckless homicide. He did not testify in his own defense.
