Wisconsin’s Hispanic population up by 48 percent since 2000 Census

Wisconsin News
Wisconsin’s Hispanic population continues to grow.

Wisconsin’s Hispanic population continues to grow.

The U.S. Census Bureau says almost 286,000 Latinos now live in the Badger State, an increase of 48 percent since the last full Census in 2000.

They now make just more than 5 percent of the state’s population.

Darryl Morin, head of the League of United Latin American Citizens of Wisconsin, says Hispanics are bringing a host of economic and social benefits to the state.

He says they’re not forcing their way of life on others but instead, they’re integrating into the country’s social fabric.

Almost four of every 10 Wisconsin Hispanics live in Milwaukee County. They make up 12 percent of that county’s population, with just more than 114,000.

That’s 39 percent more than in 2000.

Also, the Census Bureau says Wisconsin’s Asian population has grown by 26 percent to 114,000.

And African-Americans grew by 10.5 percent, to 342,000.
