Not much was known early this morning about a small plane that crashed in a remote wooded area in western Wisconsin.

Two people are confirmed dead, and Jackson County sheriff’s officials do not believe anyone else was on board.

The FAA checked with local air traffic controllers Sunday night, but no one reported a missing aircraft.

Chief deputy Mark Moan said a man called the sheriff’s department around 6 p.m. Sunday, and said he heard the plane sputter and then explode. Two more calls to 911 followed.

Officials said there was a fire on the ground and the site was so remote rescuers had to use ATV’s to get to the plane.

Also, they were hampered by rain and thunderstorms that continue this morning in much of Wisconsin.
