Wisconsin dairy farmers will soon get checks from the U-S-D-A. The government said yesterday it’s starting to distribute $290 million in direct assistance to farmers plagued by low milk prices and higher production costs. The payments are based on the amount of milk produced from February through July. A farmer with 85 cows is expected to get around five-thousand dollars. Congress approved the latest farm aid earlier this fall. House Appropriations chairman David Obey of Wausau said it won’t cover all the losses farmers have suffered – but it could be the difference between surviving and going out of business.
