Built in 1839, Marina Mills was the first sawmill on the St. Croix River. This marked the beginning of the lumber era which created unrivaled growth and prosperity for the region. By 1855 there were 14 mills in the St. Croix Valley producing more than 34 million feet of lumber per year. The lumber industry peaked in the 1870s and by World War I there were only a few mills left.
