James F. Kerfoot, born Jan. 2, 1931, died May 21, 2012, at his home, River Falls.

Resident of River Falls for the past 50 years. Jim grew up in St. Paul, Minn., and attended Central High School. After serving in the Air Force, he attended the University of Minnesota, where he received a Ph.D. in 1960. He taught 1 year at Penn State University, then came to UW-RF as director of the Reading Center and professor of education.
He was involved for many years with canoeing - building canoes, racing canoes, and canoe camping in the B.W.C.A., leaving from the Gunflint Lodge, established by his aunt and uncle Justine and Bill Kerfoot. Not only did he build canoes, but he and his wife built their house, living in the basement while completing the upstairs and loft.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Kenneth.
He is survived by his wife, Anne; son, Mark Kerfoot, Shell Lake, Wis.; daughters Schelle Kerfoot Barr, Woodbury, Minn., and Elaine Murphy Keller, Santa Monica, Calif.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at Cashman-Hill Funeral Home, River Falls, from 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 25.
