Alva Marie Kinney, age 80, of Hudson, died Monday, July 23, at the Christian Community Home in Hudson.

Alva was born on Oct. 28, 1931, in Roberts, Wis., the daughter of Alan and Elizabeth (Hauth) Hanley. She was raised in Hudson where she attended elementary school near Trout Brook and later graduated from Hudson High School. On Nov. 8, 1952, she was united in marriage to Andrew "Andy" Kinney at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson. This union would be blessed with four children.

For those who knew Alva, they came to appreciate her love of children. She was a devoted wife and mother but also gave much of her life providing daycare for other children. She worked for over 25 years as a daycare provider for Catholic Charities in the Twin Cities. Alva was also a dedicated member of St. Patrick's where she enjoyed her time spent with the PCCW and working funeral luncheons. Furthermore, she enjoyed wintering down south at South Padre Islands with Andy and celebrating her heritage at the North Hudson Pepper Fest. Alva had a great sense of humor and loved teasing others but could also take a joke in return. She knew how to make others feel special through her gift of making others laugh. She will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.

She leaves to mourn her passing: son, David (Edie) Kinney of North Hudson; daughters, Kitty (Jeff) Holten of Apple Valley, Minn., Karen Kinney of St. Paul, Kim Bailey of Louisiana; grandchildren, Keppen (Kyle) Kettering, Nicholas Kinney, Krista Kinney, Adam (Lacey) Holten, Ben (Brittany) Holten, Luke Kinney, Jillian Kinney, Olivia Bailey; great-grandchildren, Leah and Jocelyn Holten; brother, John (Darlene) Hanley of River Falls; sister Ilene (Rolf) Tiedemann of Hudson; as well as many special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Andy; son-in-law Tom Bailey; and sister Grace (Lester) Dedrick.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson. To honor Alva's devotion to the rosary, the rosary will be said on Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. prior to the Mass at St. Patrick's. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with casketbearers being Adam Holten, Krista Kinney, Ben Holten, Nick Kinney, Keppen Kettering, Luke Kinney, Mark Hanley, Duane Hanley, Paul Hanley, and Kevin Tiedemann. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson.

Dave, Don't know if you remember me but my Grandma Bunny (Bernadette Bowers) was your great aunt. I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your mom, I don't have a lot of memories of your side of the family, but the few I do are good ones. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Debra Bowers

Kinney kids, I just heard about your mom, and wanted to let you know that I always loved her. As Melanie said, we lived behind your house, and our Uncle Ken and our parents were friends of yours. Your mom once saved me from a dog that had knocked me down, and was standing over me growling. I was terrified, and never more pleased to see Alva. Many years later, when our son, Christopher, attended the Hudson Day Care Center, I was thrilled to see your mom there!! It was difficult for us to place him in a center, but we were absolutely in the best place he could be with her, Linda, Betsy, and Barb. His three years there were wonderful for him and for us, and he has many fond memories. I visited your mom a few months ago at CCH, and although I'm not sure if she remembered me, she still had that fabulous smile, and sparkle in her eye. Our thoughts are with all of you. David--I was saddened to hear of your mom's passing. I have such fond memories of her. We were your neighbors when I was little. I remember going to your house one day, bare footed, and I walked through a patch of sandburrs. Your mom rescued me, sat me on a swing on your swingset and picked all of the burrs out of my feet. Years later she was working at the daycare that my nephew attended--he was certainly in good hands. My thoughts are with you and the rest of your family. Melanie Larson
