Dr. Victor Edward Burchill, age 92, of Hudson, Wis., formerly of Grand Forks, N.D., passed away March 20 at the Red Cedar Canyon Assisted Living in Hudson.

Victor was born Dec. 12, 1920, in Pillsbury, N.D., the son of John S. and Jane P. (Pyburn) Burchill, immigrants from Clonakilty, Ireland.

After earning a B.A. from Valley City State where he majored in math with minors in physics and physical education, Victor served in the Air Force as a radioman on a B25 bomber during WWII. Victor was united in marriage to Agnes Gina Johnson on July 25, 1942 in Bellville, Ill.

After he was married and upon completion of his degree, the GI Bill helped him earn his M.A. from the University of Minnesota. Burchill's Minnesota M.A. dissertation, "The Financial Capacity of N.D. School Districts," lead to a new distribution of N.D. state funds and development of the Fair Share System that gave a statewide balance of funds to each student. Victor earned a Ph.D. from UND in school administration.

Victor retired after 40 years in education throughout North Dakota (Killdeer, Parshall, Halliday, Beulah, Towner, Cooperstown, Grand Forks) and Minnesota (Rochester). He had 27 years as an administrator in N.D. schools and 13 years teaching and administering at UND and the U of M.

Victor was a long-standing member of United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks and the Golden Kiwanis. He was an avid golfer at Lincoln Park Golf course until he retired his clubs at the age of 88. He was especially proud of his hole-in-one he made at the age of 81.

Victor moved from Grand Forks to Hudson in 2010. Victor spent the last 3 years living in Hudson at the Red Cedar Canyon Assisted Living Facility. The Burchill family would like to thank the staff for the fantastic care and compassion they provided to Victor.

Victor was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 55 years, until her death on April 20, 1997, Agnes; grandson Chad; three brothers; and three sisters.

He is survived by his sons, Carl L. (Brenda) Burchill of Beulah, N.D., and Alan D. (Jill) Burchill of Hudson; grandsons Corey (Paula) Burchill of Poulsbo, Wash., Casey (Maggie) Burchill of Atlanta, Ga., and Matthew Burchill of Denver, Colo.; granddaughters, Allison Burchill of St. Paul, Minn., and Amanda Burchill (fiancé, Marc Zale) of Chicago, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Erik, Carl, and Ingrid Burchill of Poulsbo, Wash., and Sophia Burchill of Denver, Colo.

Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 920 Third St., Hudson, with Pastor John Lestock officiating. Visitation will take place 1 hour prior to the services at church. Victor's grandchildren will be serving as pallbearers. Interment will take place at Memorial Park South in Grand Forks at a later date. Memorials are preferred to United Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

Funeral services are entrusted to the O'Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson, 715-386-3725.
