Hudson Women’s Club volunteer Dolores Taavola sells Artful Garden Tour tickets from the porch of the Octagon House at 1004 Third St., the first stop on the self-guided tour of six gardens. She told a guest he was in for a treat — the purple clematis covering an arbor in the rear lawn was in bloom. • Jim and Janet Nobel stand in the shade of a spreading maple in their back yard at 110 13th St. Janet is the gardener, and also has an affinity for trees. She has planted more than 20 ornamental and shade trees on their lot, including a flowering Dr. Merrill magnolia and pagoda dogwoods.
  • Stella de Oro and other daylilies bloom in the side garden at 845 Wyldwood Lane, the home of Tanya and John Slavsky. The house sits high on a hill with a spectacular view of the town of Hudson countryside.
  • Tanya Slavsky and her daughter Sophia prepare to receive visitors at their 845 Wyldwood Lane home during the Artful Garden tour last weekend. Tayna said along with her husband John they have been working on the gardens around their house for six and one-half years.

  • A flowing stream and a pond filled with ornamental koi fish are the central features of Barb and Tom Zeuli’s yard garden at 927 10th St. The stream is fed by a pump that recirculates the water. It’s the sort of setup you might expect from a public works director, which is Tom’s position with the city of Hudson.

  • Diane and Jeff Barrette took care of a runoff problem from a downspout at their home at 872 Benoy Drive A rock spillway controls the water and foot bridges give access to a garden on the side of the house.

  • Scott Schuknecht, right, discusses one of the perennial gardens at his home at 802 Fifth St. with a group of tour guests. Cardinal flowers, coneflowers, lilies, liatris, phlox and hydrangeas are a few of the flowers in Schuknecht’s well-kept, chemical-free gardens. Schuknecht said he acquired his love of gardening from his father. His job with 3M Co. requires frequent travel overseas. “I get busy when I get home,” he said.
  • Scott Schuknecht is as proud of his mulch bed as he is of his gardens. The mulch, he said, is the key to his success as a gardener. You can grow anything in good soil, he said. He said he doesn’t use any chemicals.
