Doug’s Diggings: Letters to the editor and elections
Opinion
It looks like an exciting year of elections — in fact, the excitement already started with last week’s primary. I bring this up because it is probably a good time to outline some guidelines for letters to the editor.

Letter: WEA official defends trust
I want to take this opportunity to address misinformation in a letter to the editor attacking the WEA Trust. In his letter to the editor, Mr. Lee Christianson states that school districts are leaving the trust to save money because “they no longer have to go through the WEA Trust.”

Letter: Corrects letter claim
A recent letter to the editor published in the Hudson Star-Observer was critical of remarks that were made regarding a Green Bay high school by a legislator at a public establishment in Madison last month. The letter included my name as one of the individuals present when these remarks were made. This information is incorrect.

Letter: HMS teacher questions union
It has been a long time since I have written a letter to the editor. It comes with some reservations since I want to teach at least two more years; teach students and not be harassed by local workers and/or other WEAC members. But, the time is right.

Letter: Questions Assembly vote
I am writing this letter to you in regards to a Letter to the Editor in the HSO on March 1, 2012, regarding voter fraud in the Wisconsin State Assembly. As Dean Knudson knows, and has stated many times voter fraud is a very serious issue in Wisconsin.

Letter: Defends her dealings
Joyce Hall and Celeste Koeberl each wrote a letter to the editor last week because they desperately do not want me to be elected to the Hudson School Board. To support their agenda they dug up a 12-year old incident, which is very old news, and they are attempting to make it an issue in this election.

Letter: Apologizes to senator
I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to State Sen. Sheila Harsdorf for the assumptions I made in my Feb. 3 letter to the editor of the Hudson Star-Observer. The information that accompanied the video that I saw identified the woman present as Sen. Harsdorf. I had no reason to doubt that information until I read Sen. Harsdorf’s Feb. 10 response to my letter.

Letter: Hudson shouldn’t rezone St. Croix Meadows
In last week’s paper the Hudson Plan Commission, Hudson City Council and specifically Mary Yacoub (council member) were all taken to task in letters to the editor because they have had the temerity to ask probing questions regarding the wisdom of rezoning SCM (dog track) from commercial use to public use, thereby removing it from the property tax rolls.

Letter: Questions editorial
The “Poor judgment by Madison judge” editorial (‘Our View’—Hudson Star Observer, March 15, 2012) left this reader confused in several ways, not just because the editorial was so poorly written and contradictory in several instances.

Letter: Critical of school plan
Superintendent Mary Bowen-Eggebraaten’s column in last week’s paper made for some interesting reading. First of all, advocating for a yes vote at work on taxpayer funded computers seems to be a violation of Wisconsin law.

Letter: Against abortion
I have to reply to the letter headlined “Says pro-life not ‘pro-life.’” First of all, we have received huge numbers of flyers from several groups including pro-life and all have been for Sheila Harsdorf, zero from Shelly Moore.

Unfortunately, it seems like every time I read the Star-Observer opinion piece, I find myself writing a rebuttal in defense of the recall process. You started it so here we go again.

Letter-No problem with voter ID
I am staying in Washington, D.C., for a couple months this winter, but miss the civility, the pastoral life, of St. Croix County; and like to keep in touch through the home town newspapers. Imagine my surprise to find the rant by County Supervisor Steve Hermsen in the Hudson Observer on Feb. 16.

Letter: Stories used for point
Last week the actions of two school districts regarding severance were reported on. One received much coverage, the $250,000 plus payout to the Burnsville district human resources director. The other story received little or no coverage from the main-street press, the story being the persecution and ostracism of Jada Williams, a 13-year-old African-American student from Rochester, New York.
