Bertha Fenner, longtime owner of Dibbo’s restaurant and hotel, died Saturday at the age of 85. Fenner’s reach went far beyond the family who loved her to include countless Hudson residents and those just passing through who not only enjoyed her famous pies but also her kindness and quiet generosity for more than 50 years. In 1998, HSO reporter Randy Hanson wrote about Fenner. That story is partially reprinted here.

A lot of press has been dedicated to the recent sediment spill at a sand mine near Grantsburg. This mine is also near the St. Croix River, and there is a piece of the story that I have yet to see printed. The work of a few ordinary people prevented a bigger spill.

Shawano County deputies have arrested 50-year-old Joseph Brunner after they found two dozen dead cattle inside his barn and charged him with a felony count of mistreating animals while causing death, and misdemeanor counts of starving animals and not removing carcasses on a timely basis.
