Letter: These movies not appropriate
Just a month after the Newtown, Conn., massacre where 20 little children and eight teachers were slaughtered, guess what our greedy, anything-for-a-buck movie writers and producers in Hollywood have been making millions on – you guessed it – No. 1 and 2 at the box office were “Texas Chainsaw 3D” and “Django Unchained” by that wonderfully compassionate Quentin Taratino.

Letter: Address the ‘real’ problem
The knife that O.J. Simpson used to “allegedly” murder two people was not blamed for that horrendous crime.  The culture of violence in America started many years ago.

Letter: Don’t need more guns
Gun control is much in the news, as it should be, since the tragedy in Newtown, Conn. In my opinion, this discussion is long overdue and much too important to receive a quick fix made when emotions run high. My hope is that cool heads will prevail and long-term solutions can be found.

Letter: Argues for gun control
As Evangelicals celebrate Pro-Life Week in many of their congregations this week, I have to wonder how many pulpits will courageously connect President Obama’s gun control proposals to the issue of life?

Letter: Backs ‘rainy day’ fund for Hudson School District
The School Board voted to raise the salaries of a majority of Hudson School District employees recently. They indeed should be compensated for their work. However, I believe that two-thirds to three-fourths of that money should have gone to raising compensation, but one-third to one-fourth should have gone to a “rainy day fund.”

Letter: Johnson is board choice
I first met Jamie Johnson 14 years ago. He convinced me to help co-teach a fifth-grade Sunday school class at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson. Since that time I’ve watched Jamie grow professionally at the Lommen-Abdo law firm.

Letter: Hanson for school board
I first met Bruce Hanson just over two years ago at a social event held by our Rotary club. It didn’t take me long to figure out that Bruce was someone with whom I wanted to be acquainted.

Letter: Uncomfortable with column
In his report on the book “Heads on Beds,” Jan. 17 Star-Observer, columnist Dave Wood seems to take great delight in sharing the author’s “insider” tips for robbing from hotel mini bars.

Letter: Appreciates ‘small town’
To the people of Hudson: Thank you for being a small town. I have always had the privilege of living in small towns. I spoke with one of my brothers yesterday and I said to him, you know what? Every day I go out around town and every day I run into someone I know!

Book Report: The rise and fall of empires
I met a traveler from an antique land Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert…Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: “My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!” Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The long and level sands stretch far away. —Ozymandias by Percy Shelley

Letter: Hanson is solid choice for school board
I last worked for Bruce Hanson four years ago yet I continue to speak with him on a weekly basis. Our professional lives have taken us our separate ways, but I continue to call Bruce because of our friendship certainly, but also because I know I can count on his thoughtful attention to whatever it is I ask him to think about.

Letter: Best to buy locally
A friend asked me the other day while looking over a stack of books my husband and I recently purchased as gifts for each other and our children if we had bought them on Amazon. He was surprised when I answered, “No, we bought them at our local bookstore.” “But you could have saved a bundle online!” was his response.

Letter: Lenient sentence?
I recently noticed that two individuals who were found guilty of theft, here in the Valley, of over $20,000 will do no prison time. Both were sentenced to extended probation and restitution. It’s not that I disagree with the sentence, in fact quite the opposite, what I wonder is will the courts show such sentencing insight in all similar situations?

Letter: Appreciates Kohl’s support
I’m writing because U.S. Senator Herb Kohl deserves a resounding thank you for stepping up on behalf of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). LWCF is the program that ensures Wisconsin has the resources our parks, rivers, and forests need to provide opportunities for outdoor recreation and to strengthen our economy.

Letter: Dislikes ‘disease’
Last week a caller to a WCCO radio talk show told of a disease that I had not hear of before. Upon learning of this probable contagious disease, it occurred to me that we probably had some of these carriers for this disease here in our Hudson area and in Baldwin and St. Croix County as well.

Wisconsin News
A festive atmosphere is planned at the State Capitol today as Wisconsin legislators begin their new session. Gov. Scott Walker said none of his plans for the new session will prompt massive protests like those which rocked the Capitol when he virtually ended collective bargaining for most public union employees.
