Book Report: Even in the ’50s enquiring minds wanted to know

When I was growing up in small town Wisconsin, the most exciting event that happened was the arrival at Fortun’s Drug Store of Confidential magazine, the pulpy forerunner of the National Enquirer and other rags that glut the entries of every supermarket checkout counter in America.

Margaret's Musings: So what does $4.4 million buy these days?

My ears perked up last week, when a small article appeared in the Hudson Star-Observer announcing the bridge would be painted this summer. That would be our “Bridge” -- the one I have to admit to being pretty close to.

Randy's Ramblings: Computers aren’t ready to run the world PressPass

Toyota’s trouble with revving engines reminded me of my own encounter with technology gone wild. No, my 10-year-old, four-cylinder import didn’t take off like a bat out of heck. My problem was with the phone/cable TV/Internet provider.

Doug's Diggings: The Dells, snail mail and Olympics PressPass

A couple of weeks ago my wife and I traveled with our adult kids, their spouses and grandson to the Wisconsin Dells. My son made all the arrangements, so I just had to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Day By Day: Let’s leave the driving to them PressPass

Ever since the subject of driver’s education came up at last week’s school board meeting, my own “learning to drive” experience has been on my mind. It isn’t a pretty thought.

Margaret's Musings: Tiny body — big voice now silent PressPass

Margaret's Musings: Tiny body — big voice now silent From the very beginning our cat, A.P.(Associated Press), showed us incredible tenacity. A.P., even though during the last years of his life he was brought back to life more than once, never seemed to want to leave us until last week.

Book Report: Tennis, a mystery, your favorite grandma in this week’s spotlight PressPass

Since my wife retired in June, she has become a tennis bum, playing at least three times a week. When tournaments roll around she arises at two o’clock in the morning to watch the British Open, etc.

Jon's Jottings: Super Bowl always has a Packer connection PressPass

You can’t really think about the Super Bowl without including the Green Bay Packers in the mix. The Packers were at the foundation of what has become the biggest sporting event in America and arguable pushed football ahead of baseball as “America’s Sport.”

Randy's Ramblings: Defeat of health care reform is no reason to gloat PressPass

I’m too accustomed to last-minute, heart-breaking losses. Sunday night, Brett Favre threw another interception at the close of another NFC championship game, once more dashing hope of a return to the Super Bowl – this time with the Minnesota Vikings.

Doug's Diggings: Football has become a ‘conflicting’ pastime PressPass

My football fan life has always been simple: 1 – Hope for a Packer win. If they win, be in a good mood even under trying circumstances – if they lose, shut off the TV and pretend football doesn’t exist for a few days. 2 – Hope for a Viking loss.
