DAY BY DAY: It’s time to downsize the ‘bucket list’
OpinionWhen I first heard about the idea of a “bucket list,” I figured it would take more like an old-fashioned steamer trunk to fit in all the things I wanted to do before I left all this behind.

Randy's Ramblings: Hudson City Council has tough decisions to make
OpinionHudson alderpersons are going to earn their $300-a-month salaries in the weeks ahead. Decisions on a handful of issues are coming due that promise to leave one group or another upset.

Opinion - Humility: the nature of being human and community journalism
This is one of those paper bag over my head moments. In this business, we, the journalists, depending on what media we are in, generally do the best we can to cover what amounts to, in community journalism, our neighbors, whether we personally know them or not.September 23, 2011
Doug's Diggings: Memorial Day was special; technology?
When I was growing up, Memorial Day was always a special day in our household. My dad was a veteran of World War II, having served in Europe. We also had fun on Memorial Day – as a kid, it was an especially glorious day because it generally marked the end of the school year.By Doug Stohlberg , May 21, 2009
Randy's Ramblings: The mayor is showing green tendencies
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Mayor Dean Knudson’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The mayor is an avowed conservative, and the most vocal conservatives, paradoxically, haven’t shown much interest in conserving nature.By Randy Hanson , May 15, 2009
Day By Day: Hit me - they’re 21
As the deadline for this column quickly approaches I am reminded of one of the few times in my life I did something ahead of a due date – the birth of our children 21 years ago May 5.By Meg Heaton , May 08, 2009
Margaret's Musings: Ahhhhhh, springtime!! Can summer be far behind?
As someone self-diagnosed as suffering from SAD, or seasonal affect disorder, I find the arrival of spring and longer daylight hours like being delivered from a truly dark period. All the Vitamin D and time spent sitting in front of a light box could not minimize the darkness this year.By Margaret Ontl , May 01, 2009
Doug's Diggings: More information about Coon’s Hill
On Feb 19 I put together a package about Coons Hill. It included a few historic pictures and some historical information, but, as I told our readers, we do not have much history about the hill. I’ve had a couple of calls, however, in the past few weeks with more information regarding Coon’s Hill.By Doug Stohlberg , April 24, 2009
Doug's Diggings: We need technology (high or low) to stop pirates
There are always things going on in the world that amaze me. Often it has to do with unbelievable technology. It amazes me that people can watch me, my home and my movement from some satellite in outer space. But, then I’m also amazed by how under-advanced we are in some areas. The latest example is the success of the Somali pirates.By Doug Stohlberg , April 17, 2009
Woodland Trails: Writer reflects on career, outdoors
I never saw it coming, but it’s here whether I like it or not – this is my last weekly column for this paper. Many people are losing jobs today – I guess it can happen to a freelance writer too.By Jim Bennett , April 17, 2009
Woodland Trails: When times were simpler – and better
I guess I am kind of a throwback in time, lucky to be born when I was. I grew up wild and free. Kinda like a wild boy, alone and on my own. I had six siblings all too old to have any real use for a little kid. So I took Duke, my dog, and we took off heading out for the wilds and remote places where a kid could explore, wander and enjoy all the beauty nature provided.By Jim Bennett , April 10, 2009

Margaret's Musings: The American Legion turns 90
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the annual American Legion birthday party for my home post, Ingalls-Keoppen Post 102. Now I know I am not a veteran and technically have never belonged, but I grew up in that post. I attended everything from the fund-raising carnivals the post sponsored for most of my childhood years to the Memorial Day parades that I still try to get home for.By Margaret Ontl , April 03, 2009
Doug's Diggings: Trip to Florida resulted in free ticket
Sometimes a person gets lucky – even on Friday the 13th. Last week my wife and I went to Florida to visit her sister and husband, Sandy and Tom Wells of New Richmond.By Doug Stohlberg , March 27, 2009
Randy's Ramblings: City plan - Speak now or forever hold your peace
Citizens of Hudson, if you care about the future of your city, you’ll want to pay attention to what the Plan Commission is up to. For the past few months, the commission has been working on an update to the city’s comprehensive plan.By Randy Hanson , March 20, 2009
