United Way donates to cause
The United Way St. Croix Valley provides several scholarships for children to attend Camp Avanti-St. Croix and presented a check last week as quarterly payment of a total annual grant of $4,620.

Miller honored for $1 million-plus gift
Longtime Star-Observer Publisher Willis H. Miller left a huge legacy last week. Miller, who died Nov. 16, 2008, at age 89, left $1,068,552 to UW-River Falls.

Mackin Library fund-raising continues
The Hazel Mackin Library in Roberts recently received a $2,000 grant from Xcel Energy. At the presentation was the library’s first director, Trudy Popenhagen, who works for Xcel — she presented the check to current director Brenda Hackman.

HHS alumnus commits $14K to Gateway fund
Hudson High School class of 1962 graduate and businessman Wendell A. Petersen has committed $14,000 to a matching funds campaign to complete the fund-raising for the Gateway, the tunnel under County F that connects the campus of River Crest Elementary with Camp St. Croix.

Teen spearheads effort to keep kids warm
Brooke Brokaw, a Hudson High School freshman, found a way to turn a favorite hobby into a community service project. Through Brokaw’s project “Hats from the Heart,” children in St. Croix and Pierce counties who need the items will get hand-knitted hats, mittens and scarves.
