Woodland Trails: Writer reflects on career, outdoors
I never saw it coming, but it’s here whether I like it or not – this is my last weekly column for this paper. Many people are losing jobs today – I guess it can happen to a freelance writer too.By Jim Bennett , April 17, 2009
Woodland Trails: When times were simpler – and better
I guess I am kind of a throwback in time, lucky to be born when I was. I grew up wild and free. Kinda like a wild boy, alone and on my own. I had six siblings all too old to have any real use for a little kid. So I took Duke, my dog, and we took off heading out for the wilds and remote places where a kid could explore, wander and enjoy all the beauty nature provided.By Jim Bennett , April 10, 2009

Woodland Trails: Plenty of change in the air
Change is a part of life. The change of seasons is once more upon us. Rain pelts my window and puddles gain in size outside on the ground. The wind howls, making limbs shake and weeds teeter and totter back and forth as the winds powerful unseen forces rock their world.By Jim Bennett , March 27, 2009
Woodland Trails: What’s the first day of spring?
Depending on which side of the fence you stand on, you can either go with the calendar or the meteorologists when it comes to deciding which day is the first day of spring.By Jim Bennett , March 13, 2009
Woodland Trails: Gardening, and heating with wood
I’m expanding my learning and understanding about wood heat this year. Although this is not the first year I’ve heated with wood, it is the first year I think I am really getting to understand the ins and outs, the whys and what fors and the connection we have to trees.By Jim Bennett , February 27, 2009
Woodland Trails: How is your knowledge of fishing?
It’s hard to believe, especially after this winter, but there will be an open-water fishing season this spring. Yes, winter will end and spring will come and along with the coming of spring comes the open-water fishing season.By Jim Bennett , February 20, 2009
Woodland Trails: February and the Birkie
I love February! I just walked outside and watched the moon rise as the sun set. Geese were flying everywhere as I stood outside in a short-sleeved shirt eating ice cream.February 13, 2009
Woodland Trails: Ice fishing has been slow
We just got over the hump. With the passing of January, I figure winter is halfway through and we are done with the longest cold spells and the coldest wind chills.By Jim Bennett , February 06, 2009
Woodland Trails: Heading to Boundary Waters in June
Last week was the beginning of our waiting game. We had just finished our online registration to gain access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness via www.bwcaw.org. Our goal was to beat the rush and gain any advantage by having our form sent in online by Jan. 15.By Jim Bennett , January 30, 2009
Woodland Trails: Thinking about canoeing and camping; sign up now
When the temperature outside is more than 20 below zero and the wind chill is pushing 40 below, it seems a little bit hard to think about camping, canoeing and kayaking in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.January 23, 2009
Woodland Trails: Yellow Lake is like ‘giant diamond’
Yellow Lake is like a giant blue diamond nestled in the corner of northwestern Wisconsin. Many would call it the Badger State’s version of Lake Mille Lacs, which is Minnesota’s famed walleye factory.By Jim Bennett , January 16, 2009
Woodland Trails: You just have to make the time
How do you find the time? My son, Josh, told me that you don’t find the time. You have to make the time! At 28 years of age I have to give him credit for that bit of wisdom.By Jim Bennett , January 09, 2009

Woodland Trails: Hunters complain about deer hunting season
Are you happy with this year’s Wisconsin Thanksgiving week deer season? Never before have I heard so many complaints from hunters, almost all of them saying the same thing: Where were all the deer?By Jim Bennett , December 19, 2008
