Dr. Steven Hughes, pediatric neuropsychologist who received his doctorate from the University of Minnesota, gave a presentation on how to foster learning in children April 22 at The Phipps Center for the Arts.
Led by Chairman Buck Malick, the St. Croix County Board of Adjustment voted 3-2 last week to allow Heartland Montessori School Inc. to open its busy tax-exempt school in the middle of our quiet residential neighborhood on Red Brick Road in the town of Troy.
The question whether Heartland Montessori School should be allowed to operate on Red Brick Road in Troy Township is not about its qualifications and service provided. The issue is: does a busy school fit in our quiet, rural neighborhood?
I hope this letter answers questions regarding the proposed Heartland school. Heartland Montessori School requested permission to operate a Children’s House and a Toddler Program at 436 Red Brick Road in the town of Troy.
As homeowners on Red Brick Road, we would like to respond to the letter “Supports Troy School” submitted last week by Catherine Olson, town of Eau Galle. She wonders why Red Brick Road residents are blocking a business from moving onto our small, country road.

Residents of Hudson’s Red Brick Road are trying to block a nice little Montessori School from moving into a house with a big yard that’s been vacant for quite some time. Lowering of property value and noise are two main concerns.

The Troy Town Board heard more comments from residents of Red Brick Road at its May 8 meeting. These comments follow a decision April 29 by the St. Croix County Board of Adjustment to allow the Heartland Montessori School to move its preschool program from Hudson to the house at 436 Red Brick Road.
The effort to operate a Montessori preschool in a town of Troy neighborhood raises several legitimate questions about zoning issues in St. Croix County and raises the issue of how much influence neighbors may, or may not, have on decision-making powers.
Despite opposition from almost every resident along our quiet rural road — plus the Troy Town Board’s unanimous opposition — the St. Croix County Board of Adjustment approved an exceptional use permit allowing the private tax-exempt business called Heartland Montessori School Inc. to operate in a house in the middle of our neighborhood.

Last week the three members of the St. Croix County Board of Adjustment voted to ignore the unanimous wishes of the residents of Red Brick Road in Troy by giving Heartland Montessori School an exception to the Ag/Residential zoning.
