August is an anniversary month for the owners of the Phipps Inn. It was 125 years ago that William H. Phipps and his wife, Frances, built Hudson’s grand dame of Queen Anne Victorian mansions at 1005 Third St.
Traveler expenditures in St. Croix County in 2008 totaled an estimated $106.5 million, according to a report in the St. Croix Chronicle, a bimonthly publication of the St. Croix Economic Development Corp.
The Hudson Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau has stepped up to partner with the state Tourism Department by providing a location for Wisconsin tourist information at its office at 502 Second St. in downtown Hudson.
Sue Steele, a 23-year employee of the Wisconsin Tourism Center located in Hudson, assists St. Paul resident Connie Evans, who plans a bed-and-breakfast getaway to a different area in Wisconsin each year. Evans called the upcoming closing of the center “unbelievable.”
With the Republican National Convention approaching in September and practically on the doorstep of Hudson in the Twin Cities, the community plans to show the state delegation and passing travelers what this city has to offer.
With prices in the $4 a gallon range, it may be painful to pull into the pump. But Wisconsin tourism officials are hoping that high gas prices will mean good business for state attractions.
