Youth theater classes offered
Theater classes for students in grades 1 - 6 will be offered on four Saturday mornings, April 14 - May 5, at The Phipps Center for the Arts.
Where the Wild Things Are, imaginative play for students in grades 1-3, will be offered from 9 to 10 a.m. This class will introduce and reinforce the basic tools for creative drama - imagination, voice, and body - in order to make stories come alive. Participants will explore vocal pitch, pace, and projection skills as well as physical characterization and control. They will learn about stage directions while using simple stories/fables for creative dramatics activities. The fee is $38.
Walking on the Moon, creative drama for students in grades 4-6, will be offered from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. This class will review and reinforce the basic tools for creative drama -- imagination, voice, and body -- in order to make stories come alive. During session one, skills assessment will be made to inform activities for the next three sessions. Participants will explore vocal pitch, pace, and projection skills with an emphasis on voice and articulation. They will also explore dialect. Other topics include physical characterization and control, stage directions and mechanics of stage pictures, improvisation exercises, character and scene work (monologue and duo reading assignments provided), and audition technique. The fee is $57.
Instructor Danette Olsen is a theater generalist who works as a teaching artist, arts administrator, and theater arts-maker. Her credits include education director for the Arts Council Lake Erie West, field consultant to the Ohio Arts Council, producer with CLIMB Theatre, and executive director of the St. Croix Festival Theatre. Accomplished in facilitating both youth and adults in drama education, she teaches a spectrum of drama classes and formats, including workshops, retreats, and weekly classes in fundamentals of drama, creative dramatics, audition technique, improvisation, character and voice, directing, and technical theater.
