Private violin lessons

Private violin lessons for students ages 7-adult are offered throughout the year by Sarah Bertsch, (715) 381-5735.

Private voice lessons

Elizabeth Hawksford Schaefer offers private voice lessons for ages 12-adult. Adults and homeschooled teenagers are especially welcome to call for available daytime openings. For more information, call The Phipps center at (715) 386-2305, ext. 101.

Dance classes begin Sept. 12

Dance technique classes for children and adults begin in September and continue through May. Students can register for ballroom dance, salsa/Latin, jazz/hip-hop, musical theater, tap, ballet, lyrical, modern, men's movement, preballet/tap, and bharatanatyam (South Indian classical dance). The class year is divided into four quarters of eight weeks each. All instructors are experienced as both educators and performers. Ballroom dance parties

Tom Larson will offer a ballroom dance party Saturday, Sept. 19 and Oct. 17, from 7 to 10 p.m. in the dance studio. Larson will offer a ballroom dance lesson from 7 to 8. Dancers of all experience levels are welcome. Refreshments are provided. Admission is $12 per person.

Visual arts classes

Several classes and workshops are offered for teens and adults this fall.

--A two-day watercolor workshop with visiting artist Jan Foss that focuses on painting California Poppies will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The fee is $99. Participants should request a materials list upon enrollment.

--The first six-week session of Quick Start to Watercolor for adults runs Tuesday, Sept. 22-Oct. 27, 9 a.m.-noon, for $185. Participants should request a materials list upon enrollment.

--Creative Cards for adults is offered Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., for $75, including most materials. Students are asked to bring watercolor paints, brushes and one-half sheet (15" x 22") of #140 cold press watercolor paper.

--A series of four digital photography workshops will begin with Digital Photography for Everyone (for ages 14 and older) Saturday, Sept. 19, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. for a fee of $90. Digital Photography for Enthusiasts (for ages 14 and older) follows, on Saturday, Sept. 26, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., for $114. Photoshop Elements, a workshop on editing techniques, is Saturday, Oct. 3, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., for $90, and a workshop on Photoshop is Saturday, Oct. 10, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., for $114. The classes in September will be held at The Phipps, and those in October will be held at the new facility for ArtReach Alliance at 224 N. Fourth St., in Stillwater. --Eight-week pottery classes for teens and adults begin the week of Sept. 28 for $207: 1) Beginning Pottery on the Wheel is Mondays, Sept. 28-Nov. 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m. 2) Clay Sculpture is Tuesdays, Sept. 29-Nov. 17, 6:30-8:30 p.m. 3) Beginning and Intermediate Pottery on the Wheel is Wednesdays, Sept. 30-Nov. 18, 10 a.m.-noon. Students enrolled in pottery classes have access to the pottery studio Fridays, 5:30-8:30 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m.-noon.

--A 10-week drawing class and a 10-week sculpture class with returning instructor Gary O'Connor are Wednesdays, Sept. 30-Dec. 9. The drawing class is from 9 a.m. to noon, and the sculpture class is from 6 to 9 p.m.

Theater classes for young people

Theater classes for students in grades 1-6 are offered four Saturday mornings, Sept. 19-Oct. 10, for $39. An informal class presentation for families will be held during the last half of the final class.

Kids on Stage, for students in grades 1-3, is from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Students will explore movement, character basics, and the art of telling a story.

Characters Wanted Onstage, for students in grades 4-6, is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Students will be introduced to tools for creating characters through movement, vocal fun, props and improvisation.

Yoga classes

Vinyasa Flow yoga classes continue Thursdays, 6:30-8 p.m. Beginning yoga is offered Tuesdays and Fridays, 9-10:30 a.m.

Classes are ongoing and may be taken at any time. Punch-cards may be purchased for $120 per 10 classes. Punch-cards are good for any of the three classes offered each week. Students only pay for the classes they attend. Students should wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat.

Tai chi classes

Tai chi classes will continue Thursdays, Oct. 8-Dec. 3, excluding Thanksgiving Day, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The fee for eight sessions is $96.

Photography club

The Western Wisconsin Photographic Club meets regularly at The Phipps. Photographers of all levels of ability and experience are invited to these meetings. For more information, contact Margaret Strehlo, (715) 386-5048.

Healing Arts at Hudson Hospital

Currently on display are the works of Judy Dannholz, Lindsy Halleckson, Margaret Holmes, Peter Landherr, Michael McGraw, David Mngodo, Joonja Lee Mornes, Odessa, Selene Plum, Teri Power, Jodi Reeb-Myers and Victoria Demos Stevens.

Gallery exhibit

A series of exhibitions featuring work by area artists Kristen Arden, Danelle Griner, Theresa Harsma, Pamelta Valfer and Kasey Westra runs Sept. 11-Oct. 24. The artists' reception is Friday, Sept. 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Galleries hours are Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Sunday, noon-4:30 p.m., as well as one hour before and through intermission of all performances in The Phipps theaters.

The Gift Gallery

The Gift Gallery offers unique fine art and traditional crafts by noted area artists. Gift certificates are also available. Gift Gallery hours are Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Sunday, noon-4:30 p.m.; as well as one hour before and through intermission of all performances in The Phipps theaters.

Watercolor class and card-making workshop at the Phipps

A series of six-week watercolor classes, Quick Start to Watercolor, and a one-day Creative Cards workshop, both with instructor Carolyn Streed, will be offered at The Phipps Center for the Arts. Both are for beginning students as well as those with more experience.

Session I of Quick Start to Success with Watercolor will be held Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 22-Oct. 27.

Creative Cards will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Quick Start to Watercolor will start with the basics, how to prepare, stretch and mount paper, how to use the brushes and color mixing. Then the class will focus on gaining an understanding of the inherent behavior of the medium through practicing a variety of special watercolor techniques. Students should request a suggested materials list when registering.

Students in the Creative Cards workshop will learn how to make two types of cards, nature print cards and watercolor collage. This will be a day of productive fun and experimentation. Most of the materials are provided, with the exception of watercolor paints, brushes, and one half-sheet (15 x 22) of #140 cold press watercolor paper.

Streed, of Dragonfly Spirit Studio in Hudson, began painting about five years ago and has quickly achieved success as a professional artist. She was a student of Lynne Baur for two years before joining her as an instructor at The Phipps and Dragonfly Spirit Studio.

The class fee for Quick Start is $185 and the fee for the Creative Card workshop is $75.
