Get Fit! Spring challenge underway, still time to sign up

Timber Keller participates in an end of the night class game during a winter session of "Get Fit"

Hudson youth K-5 and their parents are encouraged to sign up for some springtime fun. Who doesn't love outdoor play, gym games, trying new foods, a night hike at Camp St. Croix, and the ever-popular Kids in the Kitchen family cooking night.

Get Fit, a healthy living class, provides students the opportunity to have indoor/outdoor fun while being active in a non-competitive environment. The goal is to increase awareness about a healthy lifestyle including proper nutrition and the importance of physical activity, to help reduce the risk for obesity.

"Get Fit! isn't a hard core exercise program, it simply gets kids (and their parents) up and moving more," says Stacey Chezik, certified and licensed athletic trainer and class instructor. "It's been a privilege to work with the program and watch it continue to grow and change over the past one and one half years. I've enjoyed watching children from the different elementary schools in town foster relationships with each other and explore activities together. They're excited each week!"

For parents, the program is a positive addition to the community.

Hudson School District and Community Education, in collaboration with community partners: Catalyst, Camp St. Croix, Hudson Hospital & Clinics, Public Health, and UW-River Falls student volunteers, and in support of Healthier Together -- St. Croix County, offer this program as a local resource for families. Organizers hope participants will leave with an understanding of what it means, and what it takes, to be healthy individuals.

Get Fit! meets for seven consecutive Monday evenings. It actually began April 1, but participants are still welcome to sign up. The events continue through May 13. The classes run from 6-7:30 p.m. and are held at River Crest Elementary, unless otherwise noted. Parents are encouraged to participate.

The cost is $10 per student. Program funding is provided in part by a Health & Wellness Grant from St. Croix Valley Foundation and a Transform WI Active Communities Grant, both awarded to Healthier Together. Registration is required. Contact Betsy Ganz, Hudson Community Education, for more information at (715) 377-3722 or
