Wisconsin 10th in volunteers

Wisconsinites are more likely than most to give a helping hand when it's needed.

Thirty-five percent of Badger State residents volunteered for something in 2007 - the 10th highest percentage in the nation.

The Corporation for National and Community Service came up with that figure. It was based on a Census Bureau survey.

The report said 1.5 million Wisconsinites volunteered last year and they gave 165 million hours to humanity in the three years ending in '07.

Madison was third among the country's mid-sized cities, with a volunteer rate of 42 percent. In Milwaukee, 35 percent of folks volunteered.

That was the seventh-highest among large cities.
