December shows increased milk production

Wisconsin's dairy cows stayed busier than their national counterparts last month. The state's milk production rose by 4.3% in December, while the national output dropped by nine tenths of a percent from a year ago. Wisconsin farmers made just over 2.2 billion pounds of milk during the month. California - the nation's number-one milk-producing state - reported 4.6% less than a year ago, at almost 3.3 billion pounds. Wisconsin farmers added 4,000 cows last month, while the national herd dropped by more than 250,000. And the state's milk per cow increased by 65 pounds - more than twice the national increase. For last year as a whole, national milk production fell by four tenths of a percent.
