Renters beware: there's a new scam afoot

The Hudson Police Department wants the public to be aware of an internet scam that has been reported by several residents over the past few days.

According to Chief Marty Jensen, people have reported seeing listings on Craig's List for homes and townhomes available for rent in Hudson. The listings include photos and ask for those interested to send a security deposit and the first month's rent. One listing said the resident was leaving town for several years to go on a mission trip to Africa.

One person said when he inquired about getting inside the property to see it, he was told that the lister was in the Twin Cities and that the person should just drive by and look at the property.

Jensen said the photos and information appear to be lifted from legitimate real estate listings. He said the same scam has been reported in Chippewa Falls.

Anyone with information on the scam should contact the Hudson Police Department at (715)386-4771.
