UPDATE: Man identified in fatal snowmobile crash

A New Richmond snowmobiler lost his life Saturday in a crash on a snowmobile trail in the Town of Stanton north of the Laurel Supper Club.

The snowmobiler was identified as Eric D. Herbison, 48, of New Richmond, according to Conservation Warden Paul Sickman with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Medics were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene just after 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night in a wooded area north of Highway 64 and west of 190th Street.

Preliminary reports from dispatch indicated that a passerby had found a male snowmobiler who appeared to hit a tree just off a snowmobile trail, and that the victim was cold and did not have a pulse.

Multiple deputies from the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office were dispatched at 9:32 p.m. Personnel from New Richmond Fire & Rescue, New Richmond Area Ambulance Service and Deer Park First Responders were dispatched at 9:34 p.m. The St. Croix County Medical Examiner was dispatched at 9:52 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources as the lead investigating agency. WDNR is being assisted by the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office. 

A celebration of Herbison's life will take place at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Willow River Saloon in Burkhardt.
