Afton's gas lamps on for the holidays

The streets of Afton will be a-glow once again through New Year.

A request from the Afton Area Business Association to switch on the city's gas lamps was approved at the city council meeting on Nov. 18.

About 15 of the lamps along St. Croix Trail in the Old Village will be lighted in time for the Thanksgiving holiday and will not be extinguished until the start of 2009.

The city council decided to ration the number of hours the gas lamps would be switched on throughout the year after having to cut the budget for 2008.

More efficient, light-sensitive gas lamps which come on overnight and automatically switch off at dawn have begun to be installed around the Afton Town Square Park.
