Lake Wobegon Brass

The Lake Wobegon Brass Band, under the direction of Michael Halstenson, will perform Friday, March 7, at 8 p.m. Tickets, which are extremely limited, are $21 for adults and $14 for all students with a current I.D.

'The Fine Beauty of the Island'

"The Fine Beauty of the Island," a solo musical theater piece written and performed by Celtic harpist and storyteller Patrick Ball, will be presented Saturday, March 15, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $21 for adults and $14 for all students with a current I.D.

Private string lessons

Private violin, viola and cello lessons for students ages 7-adult are given year-round. Sarah Bertsch and Sarah Foster offer violin lessons. For more information, contact Bertsch at 381-5735.

Dance parties

Tom Larson will offer dance parties Saturdays, March 15 and April 19, 7:30-10 p.m., in the dance studio with a lesson from 7:30 to 8:30. Dancers of all experience levels are welcome. Admission is $10 per person.

Yoga classes

Vinyasa Flow yoga classes continue on Mondays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and Thursdays from 6:30-8 p.m. Beginning yoga is offered Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Classes are ongoing and may be taken at any time. Punch-cards may be purchased for $100 per 10 classes. Punch-cards are good for any of the five classes offered each week. Students only pay for the classes they attend. Students should wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat.

Concrete sculpture with Riana de Raad

Beldenville artist Wouterina "Riana" de Raad will teach a concrete sculpture workshop Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2, at The Phipps Center for the Arts. The workshop will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The workshop fee is $199.

Watercolor studio with Lynne Baur

An ongoing weekly watercolor studio class for beginning and intermediate watercolorists will be offered by Lynne Baur and Carolyn Streed on Wednesdays, March 5-April 2, in one four-week session. An afternoon class has been added each week. The morning class meets from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and the afternoon class meets from 12:30 to 3:15 p.m. All students in the classes are invited to bring a brown bag lunch and share paintings and conversation from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. between classes. In these studio classes, participants will work on projects of their choice, with Baur and Streed providing individual and group coaching. The class fee is $100 for one four-week session.

Norwegian folk art workshops

Marlys Hammer is holding two rosemaling workshops -- one for beginners Saturday, March 8, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; and one for advanced students, Friday-Sunday, March 28-30, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 12:30-5 p.m. Sunday.

  • In the beginning workshop, students will explore the art form of rosemaling, a Norwegian folk art that is based on scrolls in the shape of C's and S's created with brush and paint.
  • In the advanced workshop, students will paint and decorate a traditional wall cupboard crafted by woodworker Mark Lusk. The fee for the beginning workshop is $63, and for the advanced, $169.

    Watercolor skies workshop with Baur

    Lynne Baur is offering a watercolor workshop on painting skies on Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. More than any other subject, watercolor students request demonstrations and help in painting the complex layers of color and soft edges in the dramatic skies that give a landscape painting atmosphere, according to the instructor. The workshop fee is $85.

    Mixed media and acrylic collage workshop

    A three-day mixed media and acrylic collage workshop for teens and adults will be offered Thursday-Saturday, April 3-5, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. In this class, students will use acrylic paints, gels and mediums to create several collage elements from which to work. The workshop fee is $235.

    Healing arts at Hudson Hospital

    Currently on display are the works of Jean Accola, Mary Barrett, David Brock, Robert Cooper, PaTricia Debevec Dillon, Mara Hollenbeck, Kirsten Johnson, Donna Kidd, Sue Kyllonen, Peggy Lauritsen, Elizabeth Papenfuss, Don Pulver, Dean Rehpohl, James Sullivan, Marilynn Taylor and Susan Zinschlag.

    The Galleries

    An exhibition featuring the work of five area artists -- oil paintings by Mary Jo Van Dell (Stillwater), sculpture by Aaron Dysart (St. Paul), oil paintings by Gregory Fitz (St. Paul), photographs by Norbert Marklin (Minneapolis) and functional pottery by Willem Gebben (Colfax) -- is on view through Saturday, March 22. Galleries hours are Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Sunday, noon-4:30 p.m., as well as one hour before and through intermission of all performances in The Phipps theaters.

    The Gift Gallery, Atrium Gallery

    The Gift Gallery and Atrium Gallery offer unique fine art and traditional crafts by noted area artists. Gift certificates are also available.
