Donations needed for North Hudson vets memorial

The completion of a veterans memorial in front of the remodeled North Hudson Village Hall is hung up for lack of cash.

Trustee George Klein said that the project may be suffering from lack of publicity and said anyone interested could contribute to the fund by sending a check to the NH Veterans Memorial Fund, 400 Seventh St. N., Hudson WI 54016 or make a donation in person at the Village Hall.

Colleen O'Brien-Berglund, chairman of the village Park Board, said $88 was received for the memorial in the "Pennies for Parks" jars at Pepper Fest in August.

John Helgeson, a member of the Park Board who heads up the project, said, "The bare bones of the project will include five seals of the five branches of the armed forces mounted on the block structure at the base of the flags in front of the Village Hall.

The brass emblems would be 15 inches in diameter and cost about $2,000 with mounting gear, he said.

"So far, two individuals have donated about $800 to the project," Helgeson said.

He said some $6,000 is needed to cover the cost of the entire project including the flag poles and concrete base. Helgeson hopes fund-raising efforts will produce $10,000 to include a memorial inside the building.

"The VFW has donated a POW MIA flag and the Hudson Police Department an American flag that flew in Iraq. It would be nice to display them inside," he said.

Helgeson would also hope to build a maintenance fund for the memorial. "The flags will probably have to be replaced once or twice a year," he said.
