UPDATE: Hudson man arrested in connection with Tuesday night chase

Johnathan James Bluemel, 18, of Hudson has been charged with stealing a pickup truck at the MR Convenience station-store Tuesday night and leading police on a chase into the Twin Cities.

A complaint charging Bluemel with one felony count of taking and driving a vehicle without the owner's consent was filed Wednesday in St. Croix County Circuit Court.

Bluemel, whose address is listed as 551 Dru Drive, also was charged with a misdemeanor count of bail jumping.

Court records indicate that Bluemel pleaded guilty last April to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly. Sentencing in that case was withheld when he entered into a deferred prosecution agreement.

Two other misdemeanor charges, for disorderly conduct and bail jumping, were dismissed as part of the deferred prosecution agreement.

The St. Croix County Sheriff's Department received a call at 10:10 p.m. Tuesday that a 1998 Dodge pickup had been stolen at MR Convenience, located on Hwy. 12 in the town of Hudson, just north of Interstate 94.

A deputy happened to be near milepost 2 on I-94 and spotted the pickup heading west on I-94. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but the pickup sped up and crossed the bridge into Minnesota.

The Minnesota Highway Patrol joined the chase and it continued through Washington and Ramsey counties at speeds approaching 100 mph before ending in Hennepin County at I-94 and Lyndale Ave. Minnesota authorities put down stop sticks and brought vehicle to a halt.

"The suspect is someone we are quite familiar with," St. Croix County Sheriff Dennis Hillstead said following Bluemel's arrest.
