Long shot dooms Raider boys, North wins 50-42

Raider center Seth Stanchik, left, looks for an opening against Eau Claire North's 6-foot-11 Evan Anderson. Hudson coach Jason Swavely watches from the sideline. North defeated Hudson 50-42 in Saturday afternoon's regional final tournament game.

A desperation three-pointer at the buzzer by Eau Claire North's Andy Kleist sent Saturday afternoon's regional final boys basketball game between Hudson and the Huskies into overtime.

The visiting Huskies completed their remarkable comeback in the four-minute extra session and came away with a 50-42 win.

Kleist's shot from about 10 feet behind the half-court line, next to the scorer's table, left Hudson fans in stunned silence. The large crowd of North supporters screamed in jubilation and surprise.

With 2.6 seconds remaining in the game, it appeared certain that the Raiders would be the team to advance to the sectional round of the WIAA tournament.

North's Tyler Brown had forced up a long three-point attempt, which bounced off the rim and into the hands of Hudson guard Nate Roeder.

A North player prompting fouled Roeder, sending him to the free-throw line for a one and one.

The normally sure-shooting Roeder missed. The ball came down to Kleist, who dribbled up the left side of the court and launched the astounding shot from near the scorer's table.

It tied the score at 38.

North's Tyler Sonsalla hit a three-pointer to start the overtime, giving the Huskies even more momentum. They went up 44-39 on two free throws by Tyler Brown with 1:27 remaining in the overtime.

The Raiders appeared to be in command of the game at the end of the third period, with them leading 34-25. But the Huskies outscored them 13-4 in the fourth quarter.

Roeder scored a game-high 14 points. Seth Stanchik added 11 points, Ben Gresmer, 9, and Jordan Vitek, 6, for the Raiders.

The Huskies were led by Sonsalla and Tyler Brown with 13 points each.
