Border battle winner determined this weekend

MADISON -- With the final two events this weekend, just 10 points separate Wisconsin and Minnesota in the third annual Border Battle.

Wisconsin has 405 and Minnesota has 395 points as for the second time in three years, the battle for the cup comes down to the last weekend of the season.

The 40 points earned by the each of the men's and women's track teams at the Big Ten Conference Championship this Saturday and Sunday will determine the winner. In sports that do not have head-to-head meetings the 40 points are determined by each team's placing in the conference championships.

With 30 of 32 events contested, Wisconsin has maintained its lead throughout the year, but the Gophers closed the gap considerably this spring earning 120 points with victories in women's rowing, women's tennis and men's golf. The Gophers also swept UW in men's and women's swimming (80 points), wrestling (40) and women's indoor track (40).

The Badgers were outright winners in women's soccer (40), football (40), men's and women's cross country (80), men's basketball (40), men's indoor track (40), men's tennis (40) and women's golf (40).

The teams split (20 each) in volleyball, women's basketball and softball, and UW took 35 of 40 points in women's hockey, while UM collected 30 of 40 points in men's hockey.

In its third year, the Border Battle is tied at 1-1, with Wisconsin winning the inaugural challenge and Minnesota winning last year. For complete results and this year's point distribution click on the Border Battle page on
