Badger men track team takes 4th Big Ten title

The University of Wisconsin men's track team won its school-record fourth straight Big Ten title Sunday at Penn State.

The Badgers had 145.5 points to 100 for second-place University of Minnesota.

It was also the fourth straight time the Badgers won the runners' Triple Crown -- league titles in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track in the same seasons.

Coach Ed Nuttycombe won his 23rd Big Ten crown, tying the league record for the most titles by a single coach. Indiana University swim coach Doc Counsilman also won 23 championships from 1958-90.

Nuttycombe gave credit to his seniors.

Demi Omole won his fourth straight gold medal in the 100-meters, the first conference athlete ever to do that. Omole also won his first crown in the 200.

The Badgers' 400-meter relay team also took its fourth straight gold, also a league-first.

Wisconsin's Tim Nelson won his second 5,000 meter title. Chris Solinsky was edged at the finish line by Michigan's Justin Switzer in the 1,500 meter.

On the women's side, Wisconsin took eighth ,same as a year ago. Kayla Schultz had the team's best finish, taking third in the discus.
