Clear Lake man killed in Thursday crash

A Clear Lake man was killed and two other people were injured when two vehicles collided on Highway 63/64 east of 240th Street in the Town of Cylon just before 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening, according to a St. Croix County Sheriff's Department press release.

Passenger Rolando Ontiveros-Contreras, 25, of Clear Lake, was killed at the scene, according to the release. Driver Isrrael Romos, 33, of Clear Lake, was taken to Regions Hospital with serious injuries. Driver Daniel J. Dittman, 46, of Menomonie, was evaluated at the scene by New Richmond Area Ambulance Service EMTs.

According to the release, Romos was driving a 2000 Honda Civic west on Highway 63/64 with Ontiveros-Contreras in the passenger seat. The Civic crossed the center line and was struck in the passenger side by a Chevrolet Suburban driven by Dittman. The Civic came to rest in the south ditch and the Suburban came to rest on the south shoulder. All occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Snow and slippery road conditions appeared to be a factor in the crash, according to the release.

"It was more than what we'd see on a normal day," said St. Croix County Sheriff's Department Capt. Jeff Klatt. "They were busy going from crash to crash last night."

Authorities closed the highway for more than 90 minutes after the crash and routed traffic around the scene onto 240th Street and 200th Avenue.

In addition to St. Croix County Sheriff's deputies and New Richmond EMTs, personnel from the St. Croix County Medical Examiner's Office, Deer Park Area Fire Department, Deer Park First Responders, the Clear Lake Police Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
