Fire damages horse barn in St. Joseph

A fire on Wednesday, Feb. 5, caused significant damage to a horse barn at 1376 25th St. in the town of St. Joseph.

The St. Joseph Fire Department was on the scene in near-zero degree temperatures for about four hours, assisted by departments from Hudson, Somerset and Stillwater. The Bayport Fire Department stood by at the St. Joseph Fire Hall in case another call came in.

The fire was reported at 11:36 a.m. The residence and 12.5-acre property is just north of County E, less than a mile west of the St. Joseph Town Hall and Fire Hall. St. Croix County online land records list the owner as Marcelle E. Lillyblad.

St. Joseph Fire Chief Ron Burton said firefighters had to remove about 100 bales of smoldering hay from the barn to put out the fire. There was significant fire damage to the wood-frame, stucco building, he said.

Burton said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
