UPDATE: Snowy I-94 crash results in two fatalities

Two elderly Altoona residents -- Harvey Wick, age 85, and his wife, Ruth Wick, 84 -- have been identified as the individuals who died Monday night when their 1999 Buick ran off I-94 and rolled over an embankment. A passenger, Judy K. Harris, 54, of Spooner, sustained minor injuries.

The Wisconsin State Patrol said Mr. Wick was traveling east on I-94 near mile marker 31 about 6:40 p.m. when he lost control on the slush covered pavement, entered the median, struck a guardrail, and rolled over, landing on a town of Cady road below.

First Responders from United Fire Baldwin and Woodville stations, Baldwin Area Ambulance Service and Spring Valley were dispatched to the scene.

The survivor, who was initially thought to have been ejected from the car, was said to have been sitting on the roadway, waiting for help when authorities arrived.

The State Patrol said Harvey Wick, the driver, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash but Ruth Wick was not. Harris was belted and the Patrol didn't specify whether she was ejected during the crash or exited the car on her own.

Harris was transported by ambulance to Baldwin Area Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

Weather conditions continued to deteriorate as officials investigated the crash. Shortly after 7 p.m., another rollover accident was reported in the median near mile marker 26.

EMS and fire crews were alerted but the first officer arriving reported there were no injuries and occupants of the vehicle were able to escape on their own.

The fatal accident remains under investigation.

The deaths are the second and third fatalities on St. Croix County roads this year.
