The Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals are the nation's best rural safety-net institutions -- and Hudson Hospital ranks among the best, according to a recent HealthStrong report released on March 11.

The findings are measured by iVantage Health Analytics, a healthcare business intelligence and technology company. They released the top performing Critical Access Hospitals as determined by the company's Hospital Strength Index. The report evaluates hospital market, operational, clinical and financial outcomes and performance.

"With 13 of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals located in Wisconsin, I think this proves that when it comes to rural hospitals, Wisconsin follows no one in performance and quality," said John Eich, Director Wisconsin Office of Rural Health. There are 1,300 Critical Access Hospitals in the United States; 59 of those are in Wisconsin. For two years in a row, Hudson Hospital has ranked in the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals. Hudson Hospital is one of only a few hospitals to earn this ranking in the western Wisconsin region.

Key findings from the study include:

  • Top 100 CAHs perform as well or better at the median overall than the full census of all U.S. general acute care hospitals;
  • Top 100 CAHs are disproportionately located in the Northern half of the U.S. with nearly one third located in three contiguous upper Midwest states (13 in Wisconsin; 9 in Minnesota; 9 in Iowa);
  • Top 100 CAHs face the least population-based demand for future healthcare services while their quality is near the top quartile when compared to all U.S. general acute care hospitals;
  • Top 100 CAH performance is in the top quartile of all U.S. general acute care hospitals in the Financial and Cost & Charge categories of the study.

    "To be in the top 100 is indeed an accomplishment that we are very proud to achieve," said Marian Furlong, president and CEO, Hudson Hospital & Clinics. "This recognition is a reflection of the efforts of our staff, medical staff and care partners on their commitment to the Triple Aim and Partners for Better Health Goals 2014. Working together in partnership with each other and our HealthPartners family will help ensure a bright future for Hudson Hospital & Clinics."
