Bob and Steve’s makes big donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters

On hand to witness the $12,500 donation were, front from left, BBBS board member Carole Mottaz, staff members Tonja Lesmeister, Lisa Thompson, owner Steve Jerlow, BBBS director Michel Tigan, owner Bob Michels, board member Dalene Crandell; back, Chamber Director Kim Heinemann, staff members Kysa Martin, Craig Monson, board member Katherine Neuman, former board member Scott Jones, and board members Michael Bowman, Michael Laatsch, Cedric Ellingson, Amy Bast and John Knutson.

When Bob Michels and Steve Jerlow opened Bob and Steve’s BP gas station and convenience store three years ago, it was always their intention to give back to the community. They did so in a big way last week when they donated $12,500 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin.

On hand to accept the donation at the store in Burkhardt were Michel Tigan, director of the BBBS St. Croix Valley Branch and several of the organization’s board members.

This is the third such donation made by Michel and Jerlow who own several similar BP stations throughout western Wisconsin. Previously they have donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Workforce Development out of River Falls.

The donation is based on the number of gallons sold at the store over the previous year. The two men said they like to see their annual donations at work for different groups and organizations that affect the lives of those who live in the community they serve.

Michels said they chose Big Brothers Big Sisters because its work is well known throughout the country but especially because it serves the community they serve, especially the youth.

Tigan said the organization was thrilled with the donation. “This means we can expand even further throughout the St. Croix Valley. We have a large rural population and this will help us reach out even further.”

Tigan said that one of the effects of the recession is that parents often have to work more, sometimes two and three jobs, to make ends meet. This means less time with their children and more need for big brothers and sisters.
