River Crest parents donate $15,000

The River Crest Elementary parent group made a $15,000 donation toward the cost of the Gateway, the tunnel that links the school's campus to Camp St. Croix.

Mike Soukup, president of the group, made the donation at the School Board meeting at River Crest on Jan. 13.

Superintendent Mary Bowen-Eggebraaten said that brings the total amount of funds raised for the Hudson School district's portion to $83,302. The total cost of the project was split between the school district and the YMCA. The district's share was $111,000. While the district paid for its portion of the tunnel upfront, the intention was to raise private funds to cover the cost.

In addition to donations like the parent group's, local businesses, organizations and individuals have also made donations.

Just before the meeting started, Soukup spoke in opposition to a proposed boundary change that would affect some 90 families whose children now attend River Crest (see story on page 1A for details).

In a discussion later at the meeting, School Board member Cindy Crimmins said that the donation should not be viewed as an effort to buy the board's vote against the recommendation but rather as evidence of the how the families who attend River Crest have bonded in the short time since the school opened in September.

"We need to consider how a move like this will impact the culture of that building," she said.

The superintendent told the board that the balance to be raised is $27,698.
