Assembly refuses to let AG sue to stop national health reform law

The state Assembly has refused to let the attorney general sue the federal government to stop the national health reform law from taking effect here.

Republicans proposed a resolution to allow the lawsuit - but majority Democrats shot it down Thursday night on a 51-44 vote.

State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said he believed the health package is unconstitutional because it forces almost all Americans to buy insurance and penalize those who don't.

Senate Republicans tried on Tuesday to allow a lawsuit - but that effort failed on an 18-15 vote, with all Democrats voting no.
