Doug's Diggings: Acquaintance resurfaces 46 years later

05/09/2008 12:00 AM
Have you ever met someone halfway around the world and then many years later that person pops up in your life unexpectedly? It will probably never happen to me because I‘ve never been halfway around the world. But it did happen recently to former Star-Observer publisher Willis H. Miller.

Letter: Frustrated by decision

05/09/2008 12:00 AM
I would like to take this opportunity to join my neighbors and publicly express my opposition to the purposed Montessori school being allowed to open in a residential home site on Red Brick Road.

Letter: ‘Now’ is too late for HHS

05/09/2008 12:00 AM
Before the last election, a School Board candidate wrote a letter to the paper declaring: “We do not need a new high school now!” I agree. We certainly do not need a new high school now. Now is too late. We needed a new high school five years ago so we would be ready for the students who are there now.

Letter: Opposes school in town of Troy

05/09/2008 12:00 AM
Despite opposition from almost every resident along our quiet rural road — plus the Troy Town Board’s unanimous opposition — the St. Croix County Board of Adjustment approved an exceptional use permit allowing the private tax-exempt business called Heartland Montessori School Inc. to operate in a house in the middle of our neighborhood.

Letter: Upset with BOA decision

05/09/2008 12:00 AM
Last week the three members of the St. Croix County Board of Adjustment voted to ignore the unanimous wishes of the residents of Red Brick Road in Troy by giving Heartland Montessori School an exception to the Ag/Residential zoning.

Letter: BOA needs adjusting

05/09/2008 12:00 AM
What happened? That’s what the residents of Red Brick Road are now asking themselves, and what the residents of St. Croix County should/will be asking themselves.

Letter: BOA made wrong choice

05/09/2008 12:00 AM
Ten years ago we bought a house on Red Brick Road in the town of Troy. The main reason was a quiet street with most lots already having single-family homes on them. No room for business or multiple housing units. A place away from the traffic and the hustle and bustle of the city. A quiet serene setting. Right? Wrong.

Letter: Speed limits are good now

05/09/2008 12:00 AM
I’m writing to you about how the speed limits in Hudson and North Hudson are adequate and do not need to be changed.

Letter: Ideas of Bible, Christians

05/09/2008 12:00 AM
What is the only thing that is more American than apple pie, baseball, white people and slavery? That one thing is, of course, the Bible. That’s right. The Bible is the most American thing out there.

Letter: Where are the facts?

05/09/2008 12:00 AM
I am writing in reference to the “Questions for Candidates” letter (April 24 Star-Observer). I would like to know how Miss Riley knows that our law makers are profiting from the war. How does she know they are making millions and millions of dollars invested in weapon manufacturers, defense contractors and more?

Letter: Make fun of gays at HHS?

05/09/2008 12:00 AM
I’m writing in regards to the terrible event that occurred at Hudson High School Friday, April 25. It was “The Day of Silence,” which is a day that the Gay/Straight Alliance group has in honor of gay people who are discriminated against just for their sexual orientation.

Letter: Asks what is normal

05/09/2008 12:00 AM
Harry Truman was famous for his “the buck stops here” presidency. When will the buck stop in our public school system?

Our View: Nude photos are cause for concern

05/07/2008 12:00 AM
There are a number of things that disturb us about the distribution of nude photos of a Hudson High School girl as reported in last week’s Star-Observer. The incident itself is disturbing, but secondly what is most disturbing is the conclusion that “this is what teens do these days.” To some, apparently, this sort of event somehow falls within the realm of “reasonable.”

Margaret's Musings: And then there were three…

05/02/2008 12:00 AM

Letter: Upset with zoning change

05/02/2008 12:00 AM
Can someone please help us? We are a quiet, quaint, secluded neighborhood of approximately 21 families in a zoned residential neighborhood in the town of Troy. With the housing crunch, we have had a house in our midst that has been for sale for some time now.

Letter: How to break presidential tie

05/02/2008 12:00 AM
After living under the oppression of the Bush administration for what feels like forever, Democrats find ourselves with an abundance of riches — two presidential candidates so qualified they find themselves in a tie. (I am now wearing both of their buttons on my jacket.)

Letter: Has lesson concerns

05/02/2008 12:00 AM
We are concerned Christian parents whose child was told to memorize the Buddhist “8 fold path” to salvation, enlightenment and wisdom for a sixth-grade social studies quiz at the Hudson Middle School.

Letter: Appreciate leaders

05/02/2008 12:00 AM
National Volunteer Week is April 27-May 3, and on April 22, Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys recognized its leaders on Girl Scout Leader Appreciation Day. River Valleys is fortunate to have nearly 18,000 amazing volunteers who bring the Girl Scout promise and law to life in everything they do.

Letter: Plan should stay as is

05/02/2008 12:00 AM
The city of Hudson published a Notice of Public Hearing, and the Plan Commission held this hearing April 10 for the purpose of inviting public comment on an application by BrightKeya Development/Bieneman Farm to expand a commercial area within the Heritage Greens residential area.

Letter: More leaders acknowledged

05/02/2008 12:00 AM
History teaches us that Americans get involved. Ours is a society that values independence, but we also hold a rich tradition of helping our neighbors through the efforts of volunteerism.

Letter: Birds are a reminder

05/02/2008 12:00 AM
We have been so fortunate these last two weeks to be hosting here a number of loons, a large flock of white pelicans, cormorants and other migrating waterfowl, as well as some summer osprey and eagles. People have stopped to watch in awe and photograph them. It makes one pause in gratitude to be living in such an incredible place, but also in self reflection: Are we offering them a healthy ecosystem, or are the fish they ingest filled with toxins that might harm or kill them later on their journeys?

Our View: Reflecting on change in county leadership

04/30/2008 12:00 AM
As local governments reorganized within the past few weeks, a change at the county level may have surprised many of us. Roger Rebholz was voted by fellow board members to be the new chair of the St. Croix County Board. He defeated Clarence “Buck” Malick, who had been elected chairman three times since 2002.

Jon's Jottings: Battleship still inspires awe, several wars later

04/25/2008 12:00 AM
On a recent trip to the Hampton Roads area of Virginia I got the opportunity to visit the USS Wisconsin (BB-64), one of the great Iowa class battleships. It was built during World War II to replace those that were damaged beyond hope in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

Letter: Can democracy survive?

04/25/2008 12:00 AM
I recently had a spirited lunch with a friend and very successful business man who had just returned from a two-day stay in the Dallas Airport as he awaited an American flight. As I listened to his lament, I began to take notes as I certainly could not otherwise retain the content.

Letter: Teachers were great

04/25/2008 12:00 AM
My family and I attended the North Hudson Elementary Follies Friday evening, along with a sold-out crowd, at HHS. The school faculty and staff wrote and performed the show as a fundraiser for Smart boards, computer technology to be used in classrooms.

Letter: Wants more state news

04/25/2008 12:00 AM
The recent state elections and their aftermath underscore the need for more local media coverage of Wisconsin issues that affect us even here at the western edge of the state.

Letter: Presence of angels?

04/25/2008 12:00 AM
Regarding the recent photos published (Star-Observer Feb. 7) about River Crest Elementary, my wife and I are moved of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to bring something very special to the attention of our community.

Letter: Questions for candidates

04/25/2008 12:00 AM
Why are we not asking our presidential candidates these questions? Why isn’t Guantanamo being shut down? Ask yourself this. If it was a legal operation, why would it have to be located in Guantanamo, away from the protection of United States laws?

Letter: Time to claim property

04/25/2008 12:00 AM
St. Croix County Treasurer Cheryl Slind and State Treasurer Dawn Marie Sass are working together to reunite you with your lost assets. Unclaimed property consists of financial assets that have had no activity for five years or more. This includes savings accounts, checking accounts, uncashed dividends, stock, customer deposits or overpayments, uncashed paychecks, life insurance policies and much more.
