Our View: Spirit of St. Croix Days offers weekend fun

The second annual Spirit of the St. Croix Days is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 26-27) in Hudson and offers plenty of activities for those visiting downtown.

The event, created by the Hudson Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau, celebrates the history and beauty of the St. Croix River. The event is sort of a spinoff of the old Autumn Taste Walk and last year's Professional Walleye Trail that held its championship round in Hudson last October.

This year's event will recapture much of the fun and excitement from last year's PWT by staging a whole host of activities in Lakefront Park.

Highlighting two days of activities are free music concerts much of the day Saturday and Sunday, highlighted by the Minnesota Jazz Orchestra and Colleen Raye & Company. The event also includes over 65 juried artists in Lakefront Park, a variety of free kids activities, food, marketplace vendors, downtown retail activities/events, authors, movies, Taste of Hudson and more.

"North Woods River," a new publication highlighting a biography of the St. Croix River, features authors Eileen McMahon and Theodore Karamanski in The Phipps Center River Room for a public talk Sunday at 1. Among the new items this year is "Theatre After Dark" which offers two free, family-friendly movies in the park Saturday beginning at dusk. Families are encouraged to bring blankets, and vendors will remain open to sell food and beverages. Begin the night with a Spirit of the St. Croix video telling the history of the St. Croix River sponsored by the National park Service.

For those who want to get more involved, the Taste of Hudson will be another highlight. The "Food, Wine & Beer Experience" is Saturday, highlighting 10 independently owned St. Croix Valley restaurants. Cost is $50 to attend a tented event and for food, wine, beer, soda and music from 6:30-10:30 p.m. Tickets are limited, so call the Chamber at (715) 386-8411.

Hats off to the Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau and all the participating businesses and helpers involved with Spirit of the St. Croix Days.

The sponsors are offering plenty of free entertainment for all of us. To make the weekend successful, of course, requires our participation. The Spirit of the St. Croix Days offers a great opportunity to end the summer with one last chance for a communitywide celebration.
