The Raider boys' golf team finished third at the nine-team WIAA Division 1 Regional in New Richmond last Tuesday, May 22 to move on to this week's sectional tournament in Marshfield.

Superior and River Falls tied for first with scores of 323 with Superior winning a playoff to earn the regional title. Hudson finished with a team score of 335 to place third and advance along with fourth place Eau Claire Memorial, who carded 338.

Raider coach Bill Schaub said the Raiders struggled with the narrow fairways at New Richmond on the front nine, coming in with a season-high score of 174.

"Keeping the ball in good position was a struggle," Schaub said. "The greens were also mowed and rolled in the morning, so the greens were rolling very fast. This set up prime conditions for some challenging golf. The players just couldn't manage that front nine at all, and I was very concerned with our position halfway through the tournament."

Hudson began putting things together on the back nine, where David Kein posted an even-par 36. Pat Bowers (40) and Brody Belland (41) also stepped up their game and Ben Lewis was playing well before finishing with a nine on the 18th hole.

"I thought that would be the end of us today," Schaub said. "Fortunately the conditions made the course difficult for many of the other teams also."

With New Richmond (344) and Eau Claire North (350) also struggling, the Raiders' team score of 335 was good enough for third place and a berth in this week's sectional.

Kein finished with an 18-hole score of 81 to lead the Raiders while Belland and Bowers each shot 84. Lewis rounded out the Raiders' team score with a round of 85 while Jordan DeLao finished at 88.

"We did not play our best golf today, but with the difficult conditions and strong winds the team battled to the end and will move on," Schaub said. "We will need to play much better next week at Marshfield to have an opportunity. Only the top two out of eight teams will move on. We are talented and experienced enough to be one of those two teams. We are looking forward to the challenge on Tuesday."
