Raider football kicks off camp

Members of the Raider football team are all business as they leave the locker room and take the field for the first day of practice early Tuesday morning, Aug. 7, at the high school.

High school football teams across the state officially began practice for the 2012 season this past Tuesday, Aug. 7, and the Hudson Raiders got going bright an early with a 7:30 a.m. workout at the high school fields.

The Raiders finished the 2011 season with a record of 6-4 and made their fourth playoff appearance in five years. They open the 2012 season Friday, Aug. 24, against defending Division 1 state champion Kenosha Bradford at 7 p.m. at Newton Field.

The Kenosha Bradford game will be the only nonconference game of the season for the Raiders as the WIAA has shortened the 2012 season to eight games.

Last year the WIAA started practice a week early as a way to eliminate playoff teams from having to play three games in 10 days at the end of the year. The early start was not endorsed by many coaches, so in order to start camp at its usual time this season, the WIAA shortened the regular season to eight games instead of the usual nine.

There will be an opportunity for each school to play more than eight games this season. Teams that don't qualify for the playoffs have the option with the approval of the WIAA to schedule a game with another nonplayoff team during the playoffs.

The WIAA will return to a nine-game schedule in 2013.

The change means the Raiders will jump right into Big Rivers Conference action in their second game of the season Friday, Aug. 31, at Rice Lake.

Hudson will hold its annual Gold Card Blitz fundraiser this Friday, with players going out into the community selling gold discount cards from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The team will host its annual Kickoff Breakfast this Saturday, Aug. 11, at 8 a.m., followed by team and individual pictures at 10 a.m. at Newton Field.

The Raiders' first chance to hit an opponent will come in a six-team scrimmage Friday, Aug. 17, in Menomonie. River Falls and Stevens Point, along with Edina and Minnetonka, Minn., will also be on hand.
